7) ALL MONTH: Andover Public Library is having a major exhibit titled "Basket Traditions of the African Diaspora." We are currently displaying 30 fascinating African woven baskets collected by Fiber Artist Venie Hinson of Andover. One prized item is a woven shield returned from the African Campaign by a WWII soldier. It was 50 years old at the time it was purchased from a tribesman, so it was probably made around 1890-1900, most likely in Uganda. The edge is lashed around with snakeskin and woven with a ti-twined technique. Another treasure is a Marriage Basket from Zululand (South Africa). It would be given by the bride to the groom to use for drinking beer at the wedding ceremony. Each exhibit object includes a complete description including how it was made and its use. The exhibit will be available throughout February. Accompanying the exhibit is complete information on each basket.
